Description
You immediately 'get it'. No words required, you feel the sadness and overwhelmed feeling without having to be told that's what this sculpture is all about. The title of the work is COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) by American artist KAWS (born Brian Donnelly). This sculpture depicts a version of one of KAWS' most iconographic recurring characters. The 16' tall sculpture, a human/animal/cartoon hybrid, is seen seated, head in hands. The figure has a Mickey Mouse body, complete with gloves, shorts, and cartoon-shaped shoes. To this KAWS add his own signature style such as the inflated skull and the Xs. It is meant to reflect the modern-day human condition: its posture and pose suggest sadness, fatigue, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. This piece was adapted into a balloon for the 2012 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
