Description
Sometimes I wonder how people are affected by the work we do as artists. This painting spoke strongly to the wonderful woman who commissioned me to do this piece. She was born during the Nazi occupation of Netherlands at the beginning of World War 2 living there her entire early childhood during that terrible time in history. We talked about her early recollections and the importance of those memories during that time of her life. Her most vivid memories were of the few times she and her family were able to visit her grandparents in the village of Tholen. She remembered when she and her grandfather would walk down to the canal in front of the grandparent’s home to feed the beautiful white swans that lived there. She also remembered their home which was across the canal from a windmill. To start the project she gave pictures of old postcards, a picture of her grandfather and other information to me - all very helpful. One of the postcards had Dutch words that I used to find the very house and location she spoke about. After the painting was completed and at her home, hanging on the wall, she wrote a very sweet note to me explaining that from time to time she finds herself standing in front of the painting in tears remembering those times and circumstances. I feel so honored to think that I have been able to create an image for her that brings back fond memories from so long ago.
